I hope you all had a great summer this year.
This year we have decided to take an unusual trip because we might not be able to go on a summer trip for a while since the kids are growing and they have more responsibilities at school during summer. So we decided to go to Hong Kong, Washington State and Canada.
I want to share my experiences with you from a mom's point of view which of course is my very own personal way of seeing things that might be interesting for you. Focused on the education of our children.
Starting in Hong Kong, the trip was overall good. We had the chance to meet someone in the street that explained us about the political situation related with the protests. It was very interesting and the kids started to read more about the history of Hong Kong.
When we arrived to Seattle, we had only a few hours to rest before leaving for a long long drive to Idaho. There we visited cattle farms related to my husband’s job and we learned how this company mixed Japanese Wagyu with the normal lean American beef.
Seeing how people work in the farms in Idaho, gave us the idea of how hard working in farms is. We also learned more about Idaho, we found out that about 90% of the population is white. We didn’t see many black people nor asians or latinos. Most people in Idaho like Trump and there are still large groups of white supremacists.
We spent two days in Idaho, in two beautiful towns that look like the little towns in the Cars movie. Then we headed to Seattle for a few days.
In Seattle we saw a lot of Asian people, mostly students going to college. People in Seattle are very nice and friendly. In Seattle we met a friend of my husband that works in Amazon. He is an executive there and he’s very clever. He is also very young and doesn’t have children, but he remembers how he was raised and I really enjoyed talking to him about how his parents raised him. He said that in his family was very important to know hot to play poker because they would play it once a week. This gave him good math skills and the ability to make good decisions. He advised me to teach my kids how to play poker, Black Jack and any other casino games. He also told me that his best teacher for everything was YouTube, so I decided to give my kids unlimited access to internet as long as it is for learning anything they want in YouTube or to make research about anything they are interested in at the moment.
I do not know how this is going to turn out, but we will see. I will tell you.
After a few days in Seattle we went to my high school friend’s house in a little town 2 hours away from Seattle called Yakima. She has three kids and the older one is a very sweet autistic boy. She homeschools her three children and give them a very good education. The three of them are very sweet and read lots of books. I had a lot of time to talk to my dear friend about how we feel we are doing raising our kids. She said that one of the things her kids do not have access to is a very social environment. Her kids have a few friends, but they don’t have a normal social life of a kid that goes to school. But a good thing in her case is that her children do not have access to drugs, bullying and guns and that gives her peace of mind.
I feel very lucky to live in a country like Japan where guns don’t exist and the access to drugs are so limited.
We talked a lot about the educational system in the US and there are many things that I think are awesome. For example, the education is more focused in projects. What I mean by this, it that is they put their knowledge into projects so students will see the use of what they learned. Whereas in Japan kids study so much in their books, memorizing things by heart.
After Yakima we went to visit some relatives of my husband in Canada. They have two children of similar ages as my kids. The way they raise their kids is with a lot of freedom. Kids in that household are free to use any devise for as long as they want and the good thing about it is that they really know how to navigate the internet. They are really independent in that way. One of the kids is a boy, he is 13 years old and he learned how to speak basic Japanese by watching anime in internet. When we first met him for the first time he introduced himself in perfect Japanese. :)
Because of that, he did a part time job during the summer as a helper of a Japanese teacher at his school. He earned 600 hundred dollars with that job (around 50,000 yen). Best thing: he was very proud of himself and his parents too.
His parents own a cleaning company. They clean film studios for big filming companies and so having a son that can make money on his own at this early age is something to be proud of for an entrepreneur family. They truly think that money is happiness. So I do.
Next time I will write about a book I am reading now on how to make your kids financially independent and smart. I will start a project at home with my kids concerning that book and I will let you know what the outcome is.
