Since I became a mom the only thing I think is about the future of my children. There is absolutely nothing more important to me than being able to give them the right education so they can be people of good. There are lots of books, blogs, and articles I read, podcasts I listen, TED talks I watch, and even conferences I attend in order to deliver good things to my children and to my students who are the same.
All the advice and ideas that I get shape the education my children get from home so I am always implementing new rules or a new set of things in our routine. I'm constantly talking with my kids about improving whatever we do at home.
In order to keep the minority languages active, I banned Japanese TV and music at home and believe it or not, the kids can live with it and they are ok with it. At the beginning I thought it was going to be tough for them in terms of missing out something that all kids are into, but no. They are ok without having access to all those tv shows and dramas that kids watch, they are ok missing our the Jpop and the Kpop, they are even ok living without SD games and other games that everyone has at school.
My children, speak in Japanese to each other as the main language, maybe because it is easier for them. One of the rules about speaking Japanese at home is not to use certain words as cursing words and "mendokusai". I know it is a very common word and it is not a bad word in Japanese, but I see it is as a very discouraging word.
When people in general use this word, they tend to stop trying harder, or even worse, they stop doing things.
The use of "mendokusai" generates a mediocre attitude in people, meaning that they stop themselves from trying to do a greater thing. It starts in very simple things like getting the parmesan cheese from the fridge so the pasta can taste better. If in that situation we encounter the word mendokusai, then most probably we will end up eating the pasta without cheese at all.
The more we use it, the more we convince ourselves that it is ok to be too simple, that it is ok to not to try harder to get something better than what we are expected. The bad thing comes when we use mendokusai for bigger things as projects at school or at work.
We all know that trying new things and being adventurous leads to amazing things and all those amazing things mean freedom, freedom from being trap in a boring life. Using mendokusai is not good.
The good news is that there are other words and phrases that mean the opposite and we can encourange our children to use them. Words like "ganbaru", "yareba dekiru", "go the extra mile", etc.
Children are very nice, nicer than we think. They follow our rules and advice and they usually do what we say. They also imitate us so much, so if we stop using mendokusai in our lives and replace it with more motivating codes, we will for sure pave the way to success to our children in the easiest way. So let's start today!
