During the spring break I had time to explore around our new neighborhood with the kiddos. My husband found a place in Kawasaki called Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum 日本民家園 which is not far from our place (5Km) and it was just amazing.
The museum is on a hill and it is sort of big. It displays a wide number of typical houses built centuries ago that were relocated and rebuilt within the limits of the museum. They are all from different regions of Japan and belonged to families that made their living in different ways. One house belonged to a doctor specialized in Chinese natural medicine, another house belonged to a family of fishermen, etc. The style of the houses change according to the climate in different regions and all the houses have antiques and artifacts that people used at that time. We found a big basket with the shape of an egg made out of vines that was used to bring people up and down a cliff! Can you believe being carried that way?!
It was very relaxing for us to go to the museum, because it made us feel we were out in the countryside, far away from Tokyo as we usually are when on vacations. So we felt we were on vacations!
The museum holds events so people can experience how life was like in Japan centuries ago, they even cook meals the way they did back then.
There is information available in English so you can take your visitors to this place without any fear of language limitations.
Here is the link to the museum.

If you are planning to go there, right next to the museum there is a humongous park called Ikuta Ryokuchi Park and green areas as well as the Taro Okamoto art museum, the Kawasaki Space and Green Science Museum 宙と緑の科学館 and even a fireflies conservation field ホタルの里. So make sure you go there early in the morning so you can enjoy all the attractions that the area has to offer.

The whole place is on a hill so it would be better to wear comfortable shoes. I hope you enjoy your visit to Kawasaki, because we did!!
